MEET SWEET PEA

Sweet Pea,

is a red nose pit mix with a heart as big as her smile. Abandoned in Marion, AL, she was taken in by the Marion Vet Clinic, where she spent a year under their care. Wanting her to have more, the clinic reached out to Big Family Rescue — and that’s when Sweet Pea’s new chapter began. Since joining us, she’s shown just how loving, sweet, and personable she truly is. Whether leaning in for affection or greeting everyone like an old friend, Sweet Pea makes it impossible not to fall in love.

Sweet Pea has a heart of gold.

One of the biggest challenges is housing

Here in Thomasville, Alabama at Big Family Rescue, one of our biggest challenges is providing safe, comfortable housing for rescue dogs. With so many animals in need, traditional kennels are expensive to build and don’t always offer the homelike environment dogs deserve. That’s why we’re creating innovative housing solutions — from repurposed campers to modular shelter units — to give every rescue dog a conditioned space to rest, recover, and prepare for adoption. These creative approaches not only expand our capacity but also improve the quality of life for each dog in our care.

This was a camper that was being used for a hunting camp. A little bit of elbow grease though and it’ll turn into the perfect home for a stray.

Campers for Dogs, Really?

Repurposed campers give our dogs something truly special — a space that feels more like a home than a kennel. With a little imagination (and a lot of elbow grease), we can transform these donated or retired campers into cozy, climate-controlled havens where dogs can relax, heal, and show off their personalities. Each camper becomes a stepping stone between rescue and forever home — a place filled with light, comfort, and love while they wait for their families to find them.

Repurposed campers give our dogs a cozy, homelike space to rest and heal — a true stepping stone to their forever families.

SHE DESERVES IT

SWEET PEA IS THE FIRST

Sweet Pea was the very first to make her home in one of our repurposed campers, and it couldn’t have been more fitting. After being abandoned in Marion, AL and cared for so faithfully by the Marion Vet Clinic for nearly a year, she had already waited long enough for a space to truly call her own. Her sweet, people-loving nature made her the perfect ambassador for this new chapter at Big Family Rescue. Giving her the keys to the first camper wasn’t just about housing — it was about honoring her patience, resilience, and the gentle way she reminds us why we do this work.
